Hello, all. I had a somewhat unsatisfactory conversation with our adoption caseworker yesterday. Although she was sympathetic about our wait and growing frustration, the only answer she could give me is that there's nothing new to report. They continue to intake birthmoms, and we continue to be in the pool, but she had no specific feedback about what any of the birthmoms have thought about us as a couple or our profile book. It seems to me that the wait is getting long, but she seemed to think we're still in a normal timeframe. The agency's average time for placement (receiving a baby into our home) over the last couple years has been about 7-9 months. Since our homestudy was approved early last December, 9 months would be early September. However, since we have not been matched with a birthmom, we will be passing that milestone in a couple weeks with still no idea of when to expect placement.
So we continue to live our "normal" lives not knowing when this seemingly interminable wait will end. Our normal lives at this time include Shawn's current time in DC starting to build his clientele there among our many family and friends in that area; continuing progress on the bathroom remodel; enjoying time with family and friends; and my nearing completion on my current work project--YAY! On the bathroom remodel, in the last couple weeks, my dad finished hanging the drywall and installing the shower stall, the tape and texture guy did his thing, I painted this weekend, and the floor guy has been installing the slate tile this week. Early next week the plumber will come finish the shower plumbing and install the new sink and old toilet. Then, when my dad has time (now that his teaching semester is staring up again) he will come back to finish up the trim, like the closet door, the lighting fixture, install the cabinet and shower door, etc. An end is in sight! Here are a few pictures.
Shawn is in DC this week, and I miss him a lot. He's been enjoying time with his family and our many friends there, as well as talking with them about his work with Northwestern Mutual. So in the long-run, he will likely have clients both here and there. In this age of e-mail and cell phones, he can really work anywhere, so it's not a problem.
I am up against a major deadline at work to get our report draft out to the agencies we worked with on this engagement by the end of August. It's certainly keeping me occupied while Shawn is away (in between supervising bathroom contractors), and I will be glad to be nearly done with this project. The final report will go out in October at which time I will be re-assigned, but I keep hoping I will get to go on maternity leave around then.
After dropping off Shawn at the airport early Saturday, I headed up to the mountains for a really enjoyable day at Lake Dillon and Frisco with my parents, brother Don, sister-in-law Erin, and their darling 2-year-old boys David and Drew. My folks rented a boat for a couple of hours so we could tool around the lake, and then after lunch and time at the playground, we wandered around a art festival and historic buildings in Frisco. Just a really fun time despite a few rain showers (pictures below). We're also looking forward to a visit from Shawn's aunt Mary Eva who will be here for the Democratic National Convention in 2 weeks. We hope to have our second bathroom functional again by then! And then Labor Day weekend, we are planning to head down to Santa Fe to see Joy and Karl (Shawn's mom and stepdad) for the weekend. Fun things to look forward to.
